Detroit, MI — Police Investigate Critical Injury Crash at Evergreen Rd & Outer Dr

Posted by Chinua Bloomfield | Apr 20, 2026 | 0 Comments

Detroit, MI (April 20, 2026) — The Detroit Police Department's Fatal Squad is leading an intensive investigation into a high-priority motor vehicle collision that occurred on Monday, April 20. on the city's northwest side. The crash was reported at approximately 5:00 a.m. at the intersection of Evergreen Road and West Outer Drive.

Emergency responders arrived to find a scene with at least one person suffering from critical, life-threatening injuries. Due to the severity of the impact and the potential for a fatality, the Fatal Squad (DPD's specialized unit for investigating the most serious traffic incidents) was called in to process the intersection.

The incident is currently under investigation.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends of the victim during this challenging time.

What Is The "Serious Impairment" Threshold in Michigan No-Fault Claims?

Under Michigan's No-Fault law, a victim can only sue an at-fault driver for non-economic damages, like pain and suffering, if their injuries reach a specific level of severity. This is known as a Serious Impairment of Body Function.

To meet this standard, the injury must be objectively manifested (meaning it can be seen on an MRI or X-ray), involve an important body function, and affect the person's general ability to lead their normal life.

In a high-impact crash involving critical injuries, the medical documentation from the first 24 hours is the most important evidence for proving this threshold has been met.

The local police department detailed accident reconstructions, using EDR data, friction tests, and debris mapping, provide a rigorous legal foundation far beyond standard citations. In high-risk areas such as Detroit, this precision proves critical in shifting full liability to negligent drivers by confirming speed and signal violations.

In Michigan, your own insurance policy's Personal Injury Protection (PIP) will cover your immediate medical bills and a portion of lost wages regardless of fault.

However, for a "critical injury" case, these benefits may not cover the full extent of the trauma or the permanent changes to your quality of life.

Accessing the at-fault driver's liability insurance for a "third-party" claim is the only way to recover for the emotional and physical toll the crash has taken. An attorney can help coordinate these two separate insurance paths to ensure no benefits are left on the table.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident in Detroit, you do not have to navigate recovery alone. A personal injury accident lawyer in Detroit can help investigate the circumstances, determine liability, and pursue compensation for medical care, lost income, property damage, and pain and suffering.
