Detroit, MI (November 17, 2025) – On Sunday, November 16, a wrong-way driver traveling on the Lodge Freeway caused a multi-vehicle crash, involving a total of five cars and leaving three people seriously injured.
According to Michigan State Police, 911 callers reported a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes around 1:20 a.m. Troopers arrived at the crash scene near Grand River Avenue and closed the freeway while providing first aid to those involved.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a 27-year-old man from Detroit, driving a Chevy Impala, was impaired at the time of the crash and struck a Nissan car head-on. The initial collision triggered a chain reaction, causing additional crashes involving three other vehicles. The freeway reopened after a couple of hours.
We hope that all individuals affected by the accident make a full and smooth recovery.
Causes of Reckless and Impaired Driving Accidents in Detroit
Reckless and impaired driving remain the leading causes of serious accidents across Detroit, putting motorists, passengers, and first responders at risk. Common contributing factors include:
-
Impaired driving: Alcohol or drug use significantly increases the likelihood of accidents, particularly during late-night hours. Drivers under the influence have slower reaction times, impaired judgment, and reduced coordination, which makes it more difficult to respond to sudden traffic changes or avoid collisions.
-
Wrong-way driving: Entering highways or freeways in the wrong direction can result in catastrophic head-on collisions. Such situations are often fatal or cause severe injuries due to the high speeds involved, leaving little time for other drivers to react and avoid a crash.
-
Speeding and aggressive driving: High speeds reduce the ability to stop quickly, while aggressive behaviors such as tailgating, weaving between lanes, and running red lights increase the risk of chain-reaction accidents. These actions often escalate minor incidents into multi-vehicle collisions, as occurred in this Lodge Freeway crash.
-
Distracted driving: Using cell phones, GPS, or in-car entertainment can divert attention away from the road, leading drivers to miss signals, lane changes, or approaching vehicles. Even momentary distractions can cause serious crashes, particularly on high-speed freeways.
-
Vehicle maintenance issues: Worn brakes, bald tires, broken lights, or other mechanical problems can exacerbate the impact of unsafe driving behaviors. Poorly maintained vehicles may fail to stop in time, lose control during maneuvers, or create additional hazards for surrounding traffic.
Preventing such accidents requires responsible driving, strict adherence to traffic laws, and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained.
