Detroit, MI — Speeding Driver Hits Gas Meter, Ignites Fire at Puritan and Harlow Aves

Detroit, MI (April 28, 2026) — A Detroit family is picking up the pieces after a reckless driver crashed into their home on Sunday, April 26, sparking a devastating fire. The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. at the intersection of Puritan and Harlow Avenues, near the Southfield Freeway.

Detroit Police report that a driver in his 20s was speeding when he sideswiped a vehicle and lost control, driving directly into the residence. The impact severed a gas meter, leading to an immediate fire that quickly consumed the structure.

Fortunately, everyone inside the home was able to evacuate safely. The driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and has been ticketed for careless driving.

The investigation remains active.

Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident, and we hope they are able to recover fully.

Legal Rights and Recovery After a Car-Into-Home Crash in Detroit

When a car strikes a residence and causes a fire in Detroit, the legal and insurance recovery process involves more than just standard auto law. In Michigan, homeowners and residents have specific protections to help them rebuild after such a catastrophic loss.

Under Michigan's unique No-Fault insurance system, the insurance company of the driver who hit the home is responsible for Property Protection Insurance (PPI). Unlike many other states, where you must prove negligence first to get a payout, PPI is designed to pay for the damage a vehicle causes to "tangible property," such as a house or its contents, regardless of fault.

This coverage is mandatory for Michigan drivers and carries a limit of $1 million. This is the primary source of funds used to cover the structural repairs and the loss of personal belongings destroyed by the fire.

While PPI covers the damage caused by the car, your own Homeowners Insurance policy will likely play a critical role in your immediate recovery. Most policies include "Additional Living Expenses" (ALE) or "Loss of Use" coverage. This provides the family with funds for temporary housing, food, and other necessities while the home is uninhabitable.

A legal professional can help you coordinate between the driver's PPI carrier and your own homeowners' policy to ensure you are not left paying out-of-pocket for a displacement you didn't cause.

Given that the driver was ticketed for careless driving and caused a life-altering fire, victims may have grounds to pursue a claim for the emotional distress and mental anguish associated with the loss of their home. Evidence of the driver's speed and the side-swiping of another vehicle before the impact will be vital in proving the "degree of negligence" required to seek compensation beyond simple property repair.
