Detroit, MI (November 10, 2025) – Early Saturday morning, November 8, a wrong-way crash left three people injured on Interstate 75 near the Detroit-Hamtramck border.
According to the Michigan State Police, the collision occurred around 5:00 a.m. on northbound I-75 at Holbrook after multiple calls were received about a Dodge Durango traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. Moments later, troopers were alerted to a head-on crash involving the Durango and a Subaru.
When first responders arrived, they found both occupants of the Subaru trapped inside the vehicle. The 26-year-old driver from Detroit was taken to a local hospital with broken bones and possible internal injuries, while a 65-year-old passenger, also from Detroit, suffered internal injuries and was transported for emergency treatment. The 38-year-old male driver of the Durango was hospitalized with head injuries.
“The investigation is continuing into this crash, and alcohol appears to be a factor,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police. “The freeway was closed for approximately four hours for cleanup. I want to remind drivers not to get behind the wheel impaired. There are so many other ways to get around.”
We wish all those injured in this serious accident a full and speedy recovery.
Dangers of Wrong-Way Driving on Detroit Highways
Wrong-way crashes are among the most catastrophic types of accidents on Michigan roadways, often resulting in severe or fatal injuries due to the force of head-on collisions.
Some of the most common causes of wrong-way crashes in Detroit include:
-
Impaired driving: Alcohol or drug use is the leading cause of wrong-way collisions. Impaired drivers often become disoriented, especially at night, and mistakenly enter highways through exit ramps or divided intersections.
-
Driver confusion: Unfamiliarity with the area, poor signage, or fatigue can lead motorists to take the wrong entrance or travel in the wrong direction without realizing it until it's too late.
-
Low visibility and nighttime conditions: Many wrong-way crashes occur in the early morning or late at night when lighting is limited, making it harder to recognize directional signs or road markings.
-
Distracted driving: Even momentary distractions can cause drivers to make incorrect turns or fail to notice warning signs that they are heading against traffic flow.
-
Impairment combined with speed: On interstates, high-speed impacts dramatically increase the risk of serious injuries or fatalities for everyone involved.
State and local authorities continue to work on preventing these crashes by improving highway signage, installing wrong-way detection systems, and increasing DUI enforcement. Still, the safest protection remains prevention, choosing not to drive when impaired, distracted, or fatigued.
