Northville Twp, MI – Multiple Injuries After Ambulance Crash at Novi Rd & Ten Mile Rd

Posted by Sandy Olds | Oct 27, 2025 | 0 Comments

Northville Twp, MI (October 27, 2025) – On Friday, October 24, a 33-year-old man from Novi was taken into custody after allegedly stealing an ambulance with a paramedic and patient inside, ultimately crashing into another vehicle. Officials reported that the incident began around 3:15 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Novi Road and Ten Mile Road.

Police said that Changlin Li was initially involved in a one-vehicle rollover crash. While being treated in the back of a Medstar ambulance with multiple other patients, Li allegedly took control of the vehicle, which included a paramedic and a patient.

Medical personnel tracked the ambulance during the incident and relayed its location to law enforcement. Police chased Li, who allegedly drove at times more than 70 mph through construction zones, blew a tire, and disregarded a traffic signal at the intersection of Eight Mile and Beck roads. During this reckless flight, the ambulance collided with a GMC Yukon driven by a 72-year-old man from Plymouth, who was hospitalized with a dislocated shoulder and broken ribs.

Medstar officials reported that the ambulance caught fire and was a total loss.  All three people in the ambulance were transported to Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital with injuries. Police stated that Li allegedly attempted to flee and take an officer's firearm during the incident. At the hospital, he reportedly tried to take a gun from an officer a second time. Officers also found a knife in his possession.

Michigan court records indicate that Li faces multiple felony charges, including carjacking, fleeing and eluding, assaulting/resisting/obstructing police, attempting to disarm a police officer, and carrying a concealed weapon. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 5.

The Northville Police Department continues investigating the case. We hope those affected by this incident make a swift and full recovery.

Common Injuries in Reckless Driving Accidents in Michigan

Reckless driving in Michigan, including speeding, running traffic signals, and aggressive maneuvers, can lead to severe injuries due to the high forces involved in collisions. Drivers, passengers, and pedestrians are all at risk, and the consequences often require immediate medical attention.

  • Broken Bones and Fractures: One of the most common outcomes of reckless driving accidents is broken bones. Collisions can fracture arms, legs, ribs, and collarbones. Even moderate-speed crashes can result in serious fractures that require surgery or long-term rehabilitation.

  • Internal Injuries: High-impact collisions can cause internal bleeding, organ damage, or blunt force trauma. Victims may not immediately show symptoms, making prompt medical evaluation crucial to prevent life-threatening complications.

  • Head and Spinal Injuries: Traumatic brain injuries, concussions, whiplash, and spinal cord damage are frequent in reckless driving accidents. These injuries can have lasting effects on mobility, cognitive function, and overall quality of life, sometimes requiring months or years of recovery.

  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Sprains, strains, and muscle damage are also common. While less visible than fractures, soft tissue injuries can limit movement, cause chronic pain, and complicate rehabilitation.

  • Emotional and Psychological Trauma: Being involved in or witnessing a high-speed or violent accident can result in anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Emotional recovery may take as long as physical recovery, highlighting the importance of mental health support for victims.

  • Burns and Secondary Injuries: In some reckless accidents, vehicles may catch fire, leading to burn injuries. Debris from crashes can also cause lacerations, bruising, or eye injuries.

Michigan law recognizes the serious impact of reckless driving accidents, and victims may be entitled to compensation for medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and long-term care. Understanding the range of injuries that commonly result from these accidents helps victims seek timely treatment and supports efforts to promote safer driving practices across the state.
