Grosse Ile Township, MI (August 2, 2026) – One person died and another was injured after a boat ran aground near Celeron Island on the Detroit River early Saturday morning, August 1.

According to authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call shortly before 3:00 a.m. reporting a boating accident near the island. Responding agencies located a 37-foot Rinker boat that had run aground on the Habitat Shoals, southeast of Celeron Island, with much of the vessel resting out of the water.

Investigators said two people were aboard the boat. The owner, a Rockwood resident, was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. A second occupant, a Brownstown Township resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was taken to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

The incident remains under investigation.

We extend our sincere condolences to the victim's family and loved ones and wish the injured person a full recovery.

What Steps Should Families Take After a Fatal Boating Accident in Wayne County, MI?

Following a fatal boating accident in Wayne County, MI, families often face both emotional and practical challenges. While authorities investigate the incident, preserving important records and understanding available options may help families address insurance, legal, and financial matters in the weeks ahead.

Useful documentation may include the official accident report, photographs of the vessel, witness contact information, medical and coroner records, insurance policies, and receipts for funeral and burial expenses. Keeping organized records may make it easier to respond to insurance requests and obtain information related to the investigation.

In some situations, investigators may examine factors such as navigation, weather conditions, equipment performance, waterway hazards, or operator actions. The findings of these investigations may provide additional information about how the accident occurred, although they may take time to complete.

The legal options available after a fatal boating accident in Michigan may depend on factors such as how the accident occurred, the evidence available, and the parties involved.

Reviewing the circumstances of the loss may help surviving family members better understand how insurance coverage, state laws, and potential wrongful death claims may apply.
